The idea for Homescapes came to Rob Kendall, the founder, in 2003 as a result of a friend of who was severely injured in a car accident. After the reality of being permanently disabled with a spinal cord injury sank in, this young man was faced with leaving the hospital and going back to his home which was not set up for wheelchair accessibility. He had spent all of his savings just to get the medical care he needed and did not have the money available to retrofit his home. Even though he came from a middle-class background and previously had a good paying job, he had to rely on the generosity of family and friends to pay for his home modifications. This situation is all too common where a permanently disabled individual cannot afford to make the necessary retrofits to move back into their own home.
When Rob Kendall discovered the magnitude of
this societal problem, he decided to begin a non-profit organization
dedicated to helping individuals with a permanent disability
move back into their own home. He decided to focus on low income
and very low income, as they are the most in need of Homescapes’ home modification services. The primary focus was on spinal cord injury patients, and now includes numerous types of permanent physical disabilities.
