This project in Chester
County is a very good example of the type of work that Homescapes
does. The challenge was to transform the family’s two-story
house so that their 24-year-old son, who is now permanently
physically disabled, can live safely and independently on the
first floor.
This young man was driving home at night last December and
hit a patch of “black ice” while going around a
curve in the road. His car went out of control and he was ejected
through the windshield. Fortunately a passer-by stopped and
called for help. Within minutes he was MedEvaced to a hospital
where he finally was stabilized, but received the news that
he would no longer be able to use his legs.
Homescapes was notified of this situation while the young
man was in Magee Rehabilitation Hospital for the first of two
visits. We met with the family to discuss alternatives for
their home. Since the available living space was very limited,
we all agreed to take the garage area and turn it into a bedroom
and use some of the family room for a first floor bathroom
- while making sure that all of the new hard flooring was level
with zero thresholds. The timing challenge was that this all
had to take place within a month of construction, to coincide
with the return of the 24-year-old from Magee Rehab.
Having been back in his home for a few months now, this young
man has already returned to the workforce. He is working part-time
and spends the rest of his time in physical therapy. His goal
is to be back to work full-time and be financially independent.
You can bet this will happen soon.
