| When Homescapes received the referral for this project in Delaware
County, the immediate needs were for a way for this individual
to shower and for hard flooring to replace the thick carpeting
to be able to move his wheelchair around safely and comfortably.
The home is a two-story row home in the middle
of the block and is 24 feet wide. This layout eliminated the
option of having a first floor
bathroom. We decided to use a portable shower unit and
to replace the carpets with hard flooring. Also, since the
family
of four was currently living in the home, it would have
been almost impossible to do this while they were there.
With the help from a local hotel, Staybridge
Suites in Malvern, PA, two hotels
rooms were donated for the weekend. After moving the family to the hotel,
the Team came in Saturday morning and replaced the old carpeting and installed
new flooring throughout the first floor of the house. By Sunday morning the
family
was able to return to their home.
The other step in making this happen was to find
movers to handle the logistics. Bdb & Sons Moving of Coatesville, PA (610-384-2400) donated their time and materials
to move all of the family’s furniture and possessions into storage and then moved
the family and the hospital bed to the hotel on Friday afternoon. On Sunday the
movers returned to set up their furniture and possessions and move the family
and hospital bed back into their newly modified home.
The best part of this project is that the family
members of the moving company had been previously helped by
Homescapes. The owner of Bdb & Sons Moving wanted
to give back for the generosity they received and to help the lives of another
family that has a permanently physically disabled member. People like Bdb & Sons
Moving make all of this worthwhile.
